12 V EN failed

Dear Julian and the xTCA support members,

We are testing CERN IPMC using CERN-IPMC DevKit V4 received in June 2021
and found that the test by “IPMCTest.py” fails.

The files which show the setup and the output have been uploaded at:

It seems that the test fails at 12 V enable.
We’d appreciate if you could check the files and give us comments.

Best regards,
Yasuyuki Horii,
Nagoya University,
ATLAS L0Muon Endcap SL coordinator

Dear Yasuyuki,

Does the card is connected to a shelf manager via the IPMB connector or inserted into a crate when you run the test?

Thank you and best regards,
Julian

Dear Julian,

The CERN IPMC mezzanine card is mounted on CERN-IPMC DevKit V4 as shown on the photo at:

The power is supplied directly, not using Zone 1 backplane connector, to the CERN-IPMC DevKit V4 blade as shown on the photo at:

The CERN-IPMC DevKit V4 blade is not inserted to ATCA shelf. There is no connection to ATCA shelf manager.

Please let me know if further information is needed.

Thanks a lot for your supports!

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Dear Julian and the xTCA support members,

We added “print” lines in ATCATester.py and IPMCDevATCA.py.
It seems that "12V Enable: OFF” is critical.
More information is available at:

Could you please check the file and give us feedback?

Best regards,
Yasuyuki

Dear Yasuyuki,

The CERN-IPMC cannot activate the 12V if it does not receive the order from the shelf manager. This is why the tester is made to be inserted into a crate and/or to be used with a shelf manager devkit from pigeon point (simple way is to use it within a crate).

Best regards,
Julian

Dear Julian,

Thanks a lot! We will test with the devkit inserted into a crate;)

Best regards,
Yasuyuki

Dear Julian,

We inserted the DevKit into an ATCA shelf for testing 12 V EN,
but found that the power is not supplied to PIM400.
We found that fuse for VRTN has blown…

We would like to replace the fuse, and would appreciate
if you could let us know the type of the fuse used for VRTN of DevKit.

Also if you know possible reason for the fuse blowing in the ATCA shelf,
we would appreciate if you could tell us.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Dear Julian,

Can you please let us know the fuse for IPMC DevKit?
We want to replace with new one.

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Dear Yasuyuki,

Sorry for my late reply, I just came back from 2 weeks of vacation this morning. Here is the reference of the fuse used on the VRTN pins: https://www.mouser.fr/ProductDetail/Bourns/SF-0603F050-2?qs=GIQXYiEeHGCpqeNgPytOMw%3D%3D

I have no idea of what could have cause this problem as I've never faced it. Could it be a mechanical issue when you inserted the board?

Best,
Julian

Dear Julian,

Thanks a lot for letting me know the type of the fuse;)
We will purchase and replace.

We are not sure if there was a mechanical issue when we inserted the board,
but we will see the situation after the fuse replacement.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Dear Yasuyuki,

Please, tell us what is the status after the fuse replacement. We are interrested by the result.

Kind regards,
Julian

Dear Yasu,

I just wanted to come back to your Discourse topic and ask you if you have solved your problems with using the IPMC Tester (DevKit).

In the meantime, on our side at CERN, we have found out that some components on the IPMC tester are in fact undersized and need to be replaced. We could tell you which ones need replacing, or we could offer to exchange your board, if there is an easy way to arrange for it. Please let me know how to proceed.

Cheers,
Ralf.

Dear Ralf,

We replaced the fuse to 1 A fuse, and everything works well now.

We are not sure but the 0.5 A fuse originally mounted would be insufficient.

Could you please let us know which ones need replacement?

If there are ones which we have not yet replaced, we will think about the strategy of the replacement

(replace by ourselves or send to CERN for replacement).

Cheers,

Yasuyuki

Dear Yasuyuki,

We recommend these modifications:

  1. C46

We have replaced the original capacitor with: EEUEB1J221, Panasonic, 220uF/63V

  1. F1-F6

We have replaced the original fuses with: SF-0603S150M-2, Bourns, fuse, 1.5A

  1. C48, C49

These capacitors are for the holdup voltage from the power input module which is set to 75V. For an operating voltage of the 75V, the voltage rating should be at least 100V. It is difficult to find components that don’t violate the height limitation of ATCA cards. Mounting the components at a 90deg angle may be possible.

  1. The small USB connectors (Management and UART0-2) have not been soldered very well. We recommend to add some solder to the through-ole pins for better mechanical stability.

As Ralf has mentioned, we can replace your tester by one that has been updated.

Cheers,

Markus

Dear Markus,

Thanks for the information about the recommended modifications.
There are several elements which have not been replaced for our development kit.
We would appreciate if you replace the board with the updated one.

Since we have two kits purchased, we would be glad if you could replace both of them.
I will assign my colleague to pick up the boards at CERN.
Since we are using the kits right now for developments, we want to send them after receiving the new ones transferred from CERN to Japan, if it is fine for you.

Thanks a lot for your continuous supports.

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Hello Yasuyuki,

I can prepare two boards for you but this will take some time due to vacation. I think I can have the boards ready at the beginning of May. Does that work for you?

Cheers,

Markus

Hello Markus,

Yes, the beginning of May works for us! Thank you;)

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Hello Yasuyuki,

You have certainly noticed that the beginning of May has passed. Due to high work load and the absence of a colleague who got sick I have not yet managed to prepare the Testers for you but they have now at least reached the top of my priority list.

Cheers,

Markus

Hello Markus,

Thanks a lot! We will wait for your preparation of the testers;)

Cheers,
Yasuyuki

Hello Yasuyuki,

The testers are ready. Can one of your colleagues pick them up from my office (14-2-21) today or tomorrow? If you want, I could also ship them to Japan. Please advise.
Note: I will be on vacation next week.

Cheers,

Markus
